The feed-in tariff explained
- The feed-in tariff (FIT) scheme was launched by the government in 2010 to give homeowners and businesses a financial incentive to generate their own renewable energy
- It's part of the government's targets for 30% of our energy to come from renewable sources by 2020
- When you produce your own "clean" energy through solar panels your energy supplier will pay you for every kWh unit you produce (at a much higher rate than you currently pay them) – whether you use it or not
- Your system must be installed by a company accredited with The Micro Generational Certification Scheme (MCS) like Solarlec to benefit from the FIT
- The FIT rate is set at 21p per kWh until April 2012 - if your solar panels are installed before April 2012, this rate is locked in and index-linked for 25 years
- Your energy supplier will pay you an additional 3.1p for every unit you generate and don't use, by exporting it to the National Grid – an additional financial bonus
- The FIT rate will undergo review in April 2012 and is expected to be lowered
